This is the second part of our series on the Langley Animal Protection Society (LAPS) and the Patti Dale Animal Shelter. The Langley Advance spent a day watching as the shelter’s staff and volunteers took on their daily tasks.

The Patti Dale Animal Shelter’s day starts at 8 a.m., but it may not end until up to 12 hours later.

While the employees check in and out, some for far longer than their assigned hours, volunteers drop by every day to help out with tasks that range from walking dogs to cleaning out the cat cottage. The facility couldn’t run without the volunteers, noted shelter manager Sean Baker.

On one recent day, Diane Givens was one of the volunteers who had come by. She was feeding and cleaning out the kennels in the cat cottage.

"This is all brand new," said the seven-month volunteer.

She moved to Langley from Calgary recently and wanted to give back to her new community. Givens heard about the shelter and signed up.

"It’s very fulfilling," she said.

She said she is there three mornings a week, but staff say she actually comes in more often.

She’s one of a host of volunteers, more than 100 of whom come in at least semi-regularly.

There are dog walkers and fundraisers, people who board animals at their homes for long periods, and even people who just come and sit quietly with feral cats.

This year, LAPS is likely to see about 200 kittens at the shelter between May and October.

Another cat back from the vet has had his hairless ears diagnosed – it’s not a big problem. Jose is apparently suffering from a hormonal issue, the equivalent of feline male pattern baldness.

Despite it being a cold, rainy weekday, a few members of the public dropped by LAPS in the afternoon.

Matt McDonald and Jodi Tarzwell stopped to donate an extra pet carrier they had acquired after helping some friends move a dog.

They stayed to tour the kennels and see some of the animals available for adoption.

"Oh, I would adopt him in a hearbeat!" Tarzwell said as she checked in on Annabelle, a Jack Russellwhippet mix.

It’s been a while since they’ve had a dog, Tarzwell said.

"We always said we would never buy a dog from a breeder," she added. They want to adopt a dog that really needs them.

Ushering the visitors in and out is Tina Jensen, who is holding down the front desk.

"I’m kind of slightly involved in every different aspect of the shelter," she said.

As well as dealing with the phones, selling dog licenses, and talking to people who want to adopt, Jensen directs calls about bears and cougars to B.C. Conservation officers, and smooths ruffled feathers of people who have to pick up impounded dogs.

Some days are good, and some days are stressful, but at the end of a long day Jensen can spend 10 minutes petting a cat or sitting with the dogs, and the stress goes away.

"There’s just something about animals, they rely on us, and unfortunately there’s some that aren’t properly cared for," Jensen said.

"They just bring you back down to earth." One of LAPS’ last clients on this February day is a dog who has had two good homes, but suddenly needs to find a third.

Winston is a 12-year-old Wheaton terrier, and is in a bind. His first owner died several years ago, and he went to another family member. Now he can’t stay in his second home, either. His current owner is very ill and going into the hospital, probably for an extended stay. It’s unlikely he’ll be able to keep caring for Winston.

A friend of the owner has contacted LAPS to see if there’s hope to adopt an elderly dog.

Gwen Fitzsimmons and Jayne Nelson will try to determine that.

Nelson and Fitzsimmons both work with the dogs that come in and need behaviour tests.

They start simple, bringing Winston into a room away from his owner’s friend. He’s obviously not too happy, after being separated from the only person he knows, following a few days in a kennel. He keeps circling the room, panting, and going back to the chair that his human friend just departed.

"I think he’s very stressed, so some of the test will be inconclusive," said Fitzsimmons. But Winston cruises through the first tests.

First Nelson sets out a bowl of food, lets Winston take a bite or two, then uses a fake arm to pull it away. He doesn’t bark, or snap at the arm, or make a single aggressive move.

After the food tests, Jenny Ramirez, the Animal Control Officer, does the "being strange" test, barging into the room, stomping around, waving her arms a bit, and generally acting oddly. Winston notices, but just stares.

Next it’s time to test how he reacts to other animals. He gets to meet dogs in a variety of sizes, from his own medium-large to a tiny ball of fluff. Winston sniffs noses and tails, and is friendly but not boisterous.

Out and down the hall, and he’s led past a room where some of the adoptable cats are sitting. He glances through the glass at the cats, but his only reaction is boredom. An up-close meeting with a resident cat – Winston even gets a tail rubbed across his nose – and he’s nothing more than calm. He gives the impression of a quiet, older gent who’s politely putting up with a lot of nonsense.

It’s a series of good signs for Fitzsimmons.

The verdict is that he’s friendly and polite, good with other animals, and could go to a home with either cats or dogs. It will take a while to get him settled in, but by the end of the session,

Fitzsimmons is convinced that barring major medical problems, she should be able to find someone to adopt him. She hopes he’ll be able to stay in one of the staff’s offices, rather than a kennel, until he’s ready for adoption.

"We’ll find him a home with someone who loves him," she said.

Shelter pets find forever homes

Owners say animals chose them

By KATHERINE WUTZExpress Staff Writer

The year 2012 marks the 30th anniversary of the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, Blaine County’s nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter.

Over the past three decades, the shelter has adopted out more than 11,000 pets and has been named one of the top nonprofits in the valley by the readers of the Sun Valley Guide. In addition, a "shelter mutt" was named one of the best breeds to have.

Executive Director Jo-Anne Dixon said the shelter has helped foster a paradigm shift in the area, as valley residents steer away from purebred dogs in favor of a pound puppy.

"People are becoming educated as to the value of shelter animals," she said. "They’re learning that there is not always something wrong with the animal, and there are a whole lot [of services] we offer to make sure the adoption sticks."

And stick they did with these four pet owners who recently took in shelter animals. From companion cats to "dogs with issues," these valley residents say the shelter is the way to go when it comes to finding a pet.

Joyce Valenzano, who works at Chapter One Bookstore in Ketchum, said that after her cat died in 2007, she was cat-less for several years, but began thinking about adopting another feline when she moved to Ketchum last year. She said she was prompted to really start looking when a big Maine coon cat showed up at the Ketchum Korral, where Valenzano had been living for several months. It was a sign, she said.

Though she did not adopt that cat, she went to the shelter and immediately knew that Morgana—then named Midnight—was the cat she would take home.

"She came right down from her bed, looked right in my eyes, and said, ‘Take me home,’" she said. "I am convinced she is my old cat come back to me."

Valenzo said the similarities are in coloring, disposition and the bond she immediately felt with the shelter kitty. Morgana seemed to feel the same way.

"I put the carrier on my bed and opened it," she said. "[Morgana] came right out, rolled over, grabbed my face and gave me a kiss."

That was three months ago, and Valenzano said she hasn’t regretted the decision to adopt a shelter cat since.

"There are just so many cats and so many animals that are unwanted," she said. "I wanted to do what I could."

Rick Sharbinin, a computer technician in Ketchum, said he had an experience similar to Valenzano’s when he adopted his dog, Buster.

"I like the rescue part of it for some reason," he said. "You feel like you’re doing a little bit for the world or society or just making the world a little better place. It’s something you can do that is sort of magnanimous in a way."

Sharbinin said that when his previous dog, another shelter animal, died, it took him some time to find another pet. And when he decided he was ready, he decided to adopt a dog that was really in need.

"The more they need rescuing, the more I’m inclined to rescue them," he said. "I didn’t want a cute little border collie that would be adopted 10 times over. I wanted a dog with issues."

Buster—then named Todd—is a lab mix that had been at the shelter for more than 200 days when Sharbinin decided to take him home.

Originally, Sharbinin said, he was looking for a dog that was similar in mannerisms and look to his old dog. Though Buster wasn’t terribly close, Sharbinin decided the dog needed him.

"Buster needed a home, so I just said, ‘What the heck,’" he said. "I asked if I could take him home for the weekend, and he just never went back. Sometimes the dog picks you."

There were a few bumps at first. Unlike his independent first dog, Buster was in desperate need of attention.

"He was very, very needy," Sharbinin said. "Even now, if you look at him sideways, he’s right there, saying ‘Scratch me, love me.’"

Other than that, Sharbinin has had no real challenges with his food-driven dog. He walks Buster off-leash, always keeping a cookie in his pocket in case Buster gets distracted and tries to wander off. Above all, he’s glad he got a shelter dog.

"They’re just such good dogs," he said. "It’s like they know they’ve been rescued."

Liz Shumway, a Ketchum resident and ski instructor, said her cats seem to display the same gratitude that Buster does.

"They’re just so sweet and loving," she said. "I’ve been really lucky."

Shumway adopted her most recent cat, Ziggy, at Thunderpaws Pet Shoppe in Ketchum, which sometimes takes in kittens from the shelter and tries to adopt them out. Shumway said she had been considering getting another cat, as her first cat, Pixie, had been getting lonely at home. Pixie had originally been adopted from Thunderpaws as well, so that’s where Shumway returned for Pixie’s companion.

"When I walked in the first time to look, I saw the kittens in the window," she said. "You know how it is with kittens in the window—they break your heart."

Shumway didn’t get a cat that day, but she did return when the shelter offered free adoption on all kittens last October. She went back to Thunderpaws and was quickly "chosen" by Ziggy—then named Darren.

"I picked him up and he was real snuggly and purring," Shumway said. "Instead of being a kitten who wanted to jump out of your arms, he just wanted to hang out."

Immediately, Ziggy and Pixie became the best of friends.

"I brought him home, and he went straight up to Pixie, nose-to-nose," she said. "Within three days, they were snuggling up together."

Shumway said she has always gravitated toward shelter kitties.

"I have no interest in getting a high-end cat," she said. "I think the mutts are the best. The kittens I’ve allowed to choose me have been fantastic cats."

Ketchum resident Bridget Cimino has a slightly different adoption story. She has been volunteering at the shelter for more than three years and had no intention of getting a dog when a tiny Jack Russell terrier mix showed up in a kennel one day.

"I saw that cute little face, and I just had to get her," Cimino said. "She had these huge ears, and I think that was it. There was just something about her."

Libby, as Cimino named the puppy, had been transferred from another shelter and proved to be a challenge at first. Cimino hadn’t had a puppy in a long time, and wasn’t quite ready for the chewing and housetraining that accompany a young dog. Since her adoption, though, Libby has responded well to training.

"She’s a quick learner," Cimino said.

She attributes part of that quickness to Libby’s mixed-breed heritage, which is part of the reason she loves shelter dogs. And, like the other pet owners featured here, she admits to a soft spot for animals in need of rescuing.

"When you volunteer at the shelter, you learn to love the homeless," she said.

Adopting a dog hasn’t kept Cimino away from the shelter. She still volunteers there almost every day, paying special attention to a pit bull mix named Billie Jean, who’s been at the shelter for more than a year.

Cimino said it can be difficult to see the dogs go after she’s bonded with them.

"You do get attached to them," she said. "But you’d rather see them get a good home than stay at the shelter."

The ears of cats are composed of thirty-two muscles. That is entirely up to you. Oh, the joys of being owned by cats. The fact all these newcomers share is a genuine love for chat. This is a business, not a social club. When comes down to it I would not simply eschew it entirely. This is a fantastic choice for any cat owner who wants to encourage drinking. Cats are known to be farsighted and they will use their whiskers to move around in those areas that they are not able to see clearly. If the cat doesn't move he will fight him. He or she may mistreat the cat (knowingly or unknowingly) and get a nasty bite in return. First you write everything you need for cat or it is the ancestral home of a correction.

San Diego Reader

Here we go again. Three days ago I reported on what turned out to be the first of two consecutive temporary bans that prohibit me from posting on Facebook.

If you thought the Mickey Rooney incident was ludicrous, feast your eyes on this. Blame Reader critic David Elliott’s scathing review of Madonna’s W./E. for getting me into hot water. It is not my policy to take to The Big Screen and second guess Dave’s reviews, but in this case he once again nailed it: W./E. is wee.

While reading the review, I was reminded how quickly Madonna glossed over The Duke and Duchess of Windsor’s meeting with Adolf Hitler at the Berchtesgarden in 1937. Wallis Simpson was a world-class anti-Semite who married well, yet according to Madonna’s biopic she come’s off as a victim. The following photo and caption appeared on my Facebook wall:

“Hey, Madonna, did you forget something? Stick to entertaining football fans with your calisthenics and leave the historical documentation to greater minds.”

Posting a photo of Hitler is no more an endorsement of his policies than disliking Schindler’s List is an indication that one is pro-Holocaust. It’s not as though a glowing endorsement of David Hoggan’s The Myth of the Six Million appeared on my wall for all to see. The point was to call Madonna out for her willingness to trample the truth in order to bolster a wobbly cinematic “vision.”

No one individual narced me like the last time. This was a case of the Facebook Gestapo keeping an eye on my every questionable move. When I’m once again reinstated in two or three days they leave me no recourse but to post pictures of Barney and Kitten videos.

The signs to look out for are vomiting, depression, diarrhea, abdominal pain, hypersalivation, anorexia, tremors. Against the grain

INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPERS

In Rosendal, one can find interesting old signs, art and advertising from yesteryear and other interesting rarities. Pictures: James Dodd

There is a memorable advertising line for Levi’s that reads: “When the world zigs, zag”. The supporting visual is of hundreds of sheep pointing in one direction and one lone, maverick sheep pointing in the opposite direction. It’s an endorsement to do the opposite of what the masses are doing: the masses being the many South Africans who flock to KwaZulu-Natal’s shores over the festive season, clogging our roads and beaches.

So, when my wife suggested we head to the Eastern Free State for this new year’s holiday, I jumped at the chance.

Historically, it has to be said, our new year’s holidays have usually been nothing short of disastrous and yours truly has been the chief organiser.

With such a flawed track record I was more than happy to relinquish my organiser holiday duties. My wife duly stepped up and we climbed in the car like stuffed walruses on Boxing Day and headed in the general direction of the Vrystaat.

The last time I had visited the Free State was when I was single and travelled to the now defunct Rustler’s Valley for three days of hallucinogenic debauchery. So my memories of the area are, naturally, largely a blur.

At Sterkfontein Dam, we experienced the first of many delays for roadworks. The Free State’s roads, it has to be said, are in a right mess. It’s pothole paradise. It’s so treacherous that one will soon need a 4 X 4 just to travel from Bloem to Bethlehem.

In Rosendal, one can find interesting old signs, art and advertising from yesteryear and other interesting rarities.

INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPERS

The first major landmark we passed was Golden Gate, which is spectacular, but with all the fallen boulders of varying sizes lying at the base of the sandstone mountains, it looked as if the world had ended and we were driving through some barren wasteland.

That was until we saw a group of tourists snapping merrily away on the latest Nikons. Our son was so in awe of the spectacular landscape, he nodded off and rather than stop, we pressed on to Clarens.

I’m not too sure what to make of Clarens really. I’m caught somewhere between cute and pretentious. I’m sure there are some excellent artists in Clarens but their magic is being lost because the majority of other art in the area is overpriced schlock.

But I guess that’s what happens when lawyers from Joburg arrive on new Harley-Davidson’s desperate to take an artwork home for the guest bathroom.

Clarens was nice, but it seemed that most tourists were there to be seen and since we weren’t there for that, we pushed on to Ficksburg.

On the road to Fouriesburg, the landscape became more interesting, as did the people. We stopped for a bite in Fouriesburg and my jaw nearly hit the floor when I saw a teenager pull up on a horse to visit his waitress girlfriend. I felt a long way from Durban.

The landscape in the Eastern Free State is not gentle. In fact, it’s in your face. If the Natal Midlands are like listening to Chopin, then the Eastern Free State is a bit like having an English football manager shout at you from about a metre away.

I was reminded by several local farmers that rainfall in the area is totally unpredictable. It can chuck it down on one farm, while a few hundred metres away the soil is being bathed in glorious sunshine. Coming from a subtropical climate, this isn’t something I’m used to because when it rains in Durbs, it stays raining.

Our first stop was Walkabout Estate. The estate is about 7km from Ficksburg, which was set up by General Johan Fick who won the territory in the Basotho Wars. It is primarily known for two things: cherries and asparagus. The Cherry Festival is in November and, with horse rides, camel rides, helicopter flips and steam train rides, it’s well worth a visit. Who knows, you may even pick up some half decent art from nearby Clarens while you’re there.

Walkabout Estate is run by the charming Fisher family who took ownership of the farm about a year ago. I don’t normally make a point of discussing people, but what struck me quickly about the Eastern Free State are the people.

They are happy to welcome you into their homes and engage with you openly and warmly. They have been untainted by city life and are unguarded and gesellig.

On our first night, the Fishers kindly offered to braai for us. At 7.15pm sharp, a deep tray of meat arrived – perfectly cooked, but enough to feed a small- to medium-sized army. Two large skewers of a combination of fillet and rump. Four pieces of chicken. Two large pieces of porterhouse steak. And to top it all off, ice cream with a homemade chocolate sauce. I know of the Atkins Diet, but this takes protein to an entirely new level.

The meat in the Eastern Free State is a bit like, well, it’s a bit like America. It’s bigger and it’s better.

We had a busy, yet relaxing time on the farm, swimming in the reservoir, strolling up to amazing viewpoints, catching crabs in the dam, feeding the chickens, talking to the ostriches. You know, basically all the stuff a three-year-old can’t do in a city. He had an absolute ball. So did my wife and I – although we did have a few city-slicker moments. There was so many of them we started to refer to them as city slicker moment No. 54 etc.

The first one took place when hundreds of bats were flying around the farmhouse. I had been given some fresh onions from the garden (about the only vegetable we ate during our week-long stay) and as I turned, I brushed my wife’s arm with the stem of the onions.

She let out a B-grade horror movie scream believing that a bat had flown into her arm. I thought she’d seen a puffadder and proceeded to throw the onions about a hundred metres into the distance. We turned to the farmer’s wife who was rolling on the floor in hysterics.

The second city slicker moment took place when we were discussing black mambas over a fiery Durban curry we’d cooked for the Fisher family. At a critical point in my story about the aggressive black mamba, I felt a sharp jab in my shoulder. I swatted what turned out to be the Fisher’s baby kitten a few metres into the air. A good thing there wasn’t a fire nearby.

On a jog in the area, I was amazed to find myself completely alone. No cars. Only the sound of birds and insects and the sight of empty farmland as far as the eye could see. Music for the soul. There are beautiful short walks one can take on Walkabout Estate (hence the name). You can relax in the reservoir. You can jog and cycle in the area or, if you just want to relax near the dam, it’s completely up to you.

After four delightful days at Walkabout Estate, we moved to Leeukop Guest Farm, a well-known hunting lodge about 5km closer to Rosendal. Rosendal, by the way, is well worth a visit. Its trendy, revamped hotel is the stuff of Conde Naste.

We spent hours in a shop in Rosendal called Turksvy, which sold rare signs, antiques and art.

Back at Leeukop, we were greeted by a rather rough looking woman named Tannie Esme. But we quickly took a liking to her. She’s a real character. The type of person you just don’t find in a city. She doesn’t like the city much either. She believes, through her faith, that God put her on Leeukop, and she hopes to see out the remainder of her days there.

We weren’t there in hunting season, which is in the winter months. A good thing too, because, apart from not particularly enjoying hunting, temperatures can apparently plummet to minus 15 in the winter.

If you do enjoy hunting, you can hunt anything from a golden springbok to a reindeer (yes, a pukka, real reindeer – just don’t tell the kids). So be sure to pack the North Face jacket. And if that’s not warm enough for you, there’s always Tannie Esme. She’s got more than enough warmth to go around.

We invited Tannie Esme for old year’s eve dinner. On our return we discovered a woman totally transformed. Talk about a makeover. She had on her finest jewellery, she’d blow-dried her hair for hours into the perfect style and she brought out the family silver cutlery for our dinner. Over yet more delicious Free State braai meat we told her about our amazing holiday with day trips into an Anglican Church in a cave, the trip to Rosendal, Ladybrand and so much more.

After spending a few days on the farm, a visit to Ladybrand is a bit like visiting Mexico City after spending time on a desert island. Intimidating. They’ve got four tarred roads and they’ve even got a Mr Price. Yikes.

As it approached midnight, Tannie Esme whipped out the cherry liqueur and the conversation turned to deeper topics of love, life and religion, and I realised what a rare privilege it was to spend a new year with a complete stranger who felt immediately like she was part of our family.

Tannie Esme is mad about horses and her joke of the night was that one day a prince will ride down the driveway on a white horse. The only trouble is she would have no hesitation choosing the white horse over the prince.

After a quick coffee, we left the next morning. We drove past numerous windmills, huge fields of bright yellow sunflowers and I found myself thinking about a few things.

I thought about what extraordinary value you can enjoy on a holiday to the Eastern Free State. A massive piece of rump steak costs just R72 at the local Spar. My wife enjoyed “the pedicure of a lifetime” for only R120. Living there would be a challenge though and any thoughts of opening a Vida e franchise in Ficksburg any time soon should be quickly extinguished.

But there was one overwhelming thought that pre-occupied my thinking and that was “what a way to see in 2012”.

Perhaps you should consider doing the same for 2013. – Sunday Tribune

» Dumped kittens find temporary home

Life is looking up for the two little kittens that were dumped and left for dead in Maryborough last week.

The two tiny unweaned kittens were found dumped in a box beside the Maryborough to Carisbrook walking trail last Wednesday.

But after the story of their abandonment featured in last Friday’s Advertiser, Maryborough resident Val Neely has fostered the two.

And as they tumbled around the floor of Val’s loungeroom yesterday the two little kittens were full of life — and milk.

It seemed a purrfect arrangement as Val is a former RSPCA cruelty inspector who ran the RSPCA station in Darwin for 10 years before moving to Maryborough.

“I love animals and I hate animal cruelty,” said Val, whose daughter alerted her to the kittens’ story after reading about it in the paper.

Val said she did not mind supplying the two-hourly feeds that her new charges require, even throughout the night.

“I broke my leg in three places about five months ago so I can’t get up the stairs to bed and I’ve been sleeping on the couch anyway,” she said.

“When they wake up and ask for a feed you just get up and do it and go back to sleep. It doesn’t bother me.”

Val’s grandchildren are loving having the two new babies in the house and have named the kittens Charlie and Garfield.

Val says they have been making great progress since she took them into her care on Friday.

“They’re drinking kitten formula from a bottle, and purring,” she said.

“Charlie’s started eating tiny morsals of tuna and lapping milk and Garfield won’t be far behind.

“They were a little bit thin and lethargic when they arrived but they’ve got their voices back.

“I just love watching them play. My grandchildren were delighted and gave them a lot of toys. But it’s shoes they’re really interested in.”

Val already has two cats and two dogs, 24 fish and four “friendly” chooks and won’t be able to keep Charlie and Garfield long-term.

In about six weeks they will be ready for a new life with someone who is willing to adopt and care for them into the future.

“The important thing is you register them, you microchip them, you desex them and you don’t let them onto other people’s property,” Val said.

Central Goldfields Shire ranger Jane Edwards said anyone who would like to adopt Charlie or Garfield and provide them a caring home for life should call 0407 508 448.

In the meantime the local pound is desperately seeking homes for other friendly cats and kittens.

Long hair is Non standard which means that the trait is not accepted according to the TICA Bengal breed standard. Long hair cats can not be accepted for championship status with TICA. Longhair may not be a recognized colors but a Bengal that is long haired is a purebred Bengal.Long hair is also referred to as a Cashmere Bengal cat. It’s nothing but a term used to make longhair sound more desirable. Cashmere or long hair Bengal kittens have been produced from short haired parents since the beginning of the Bengal cat breed.Coats can vary from relatively short with only the tail looking long hair, like Somali or Turkish Angora cat breed or you can get the length of Mane Coon which seems to be more rare. Most Long hair Bengal cats are homozygous for longhair. Cat Breeds – Snowshoe

1329882369 28 Cat Breeds – Snowshoe63 views

The cat breed Snowshoe is among the most rare and newest and it appeared as an accident. It is very appreciated for its beauty and temper and gets more and more popularity starting from its origin country, USA to Europe, attracting the interest of the specialists too besides that of pet lovers.

The story of this new breed with snow shoes as its name says too, starts in 1900 when a Siamese cat gave birth to some special kittens. Their colour had something that attracted attention as they had four perfect paws. Dorothy Hinds-Daugherty, the owner of the cat was so delighted by the new kittens that she decided to reproduce these traits as much as possible. After various mixing she obtained some cats but in spite of the efforts they couldn’t be standardized. After the involvement of other specialists and their support and effort the new breed was accepted as experimental and could be presented at competitions.

But what made these cats so special? First of all, they impresses with their colours and how the shades are arranged, thus creating a pleasant view. It also combines the traits of the Siamese and the American shorthair, which is the other one used for the creation of this new breed. The main feature is the white of the paws which contrasts the rest of the body of a darker colour and especially with the V-shaped sign on the forehead. It can have different and various colours such as the dark brown, black, reddish brown or beige but the most important about them is how they are arranged. For example, it the limbs are too coloured in white or on the contrary, the cat might lose point at competitions. To obtain a perfect cat of this breed it is quite difficult because the genes are the responsible ones for the appearance of these traits are a factor that is hard to control. Moreover, the breading of a Snowshoe cat with another cat of different breed doesn’t produce a cat with white paws. The whole process is difficult as there are some rules to be respected and at the same time they cannot be mated too often in a small group as the risk of genetic diseases increases under these conditions.

This breed has the common dimensions, namely a weight of maximum 6 kg for males and less for females, as usual. The head is rounded with big blue eyes, very expressive. This breed has a muscular and flexible body which is normal due to the physical activities they practice.

It is among the most appreciated cats around the world due to its temper as it is a perfect combination between obedient but affectionate and energetic too, always being prepared for surprising reactions. It is active but not excessively as it also enjoys purring on the lap of the owner. It suffers a lot when it is left alone so it is recommendable to have another feline partner. If there are children around, they will enjoy the cat because it is an ideal play partner and also has patience. It can also get along with some dogs, especially the little ones. It can run after toys and learn new tricks which will definitively be presented to those interested but it will especially climb everywhere it possible, a thing to be remembered by its owner. In some cases it can swim too and walk in a leash.

As for the care of the Snowshoe cat, it doesn’t request many things. It eats usual food for cats. Usually it takes care of its fur but will always appreciate the care of the owner because when being brushed a special relationship is created. It is not predisposed to specific diseases but after the age of 8 years it is highly recommendable to keep in touch with the veterinary. They might reach the age of 10 years and even 12 if they are properly taken care of.

Now, in many countries it is hard to obtain such a cat because it is more popular in the UK, USA, Denmark, Belgium, France and Poland and soon will be in Croatia too. The price is high too, starting from £400 for a kitten while the male used for breeding can exceed £1200. Al older cat can be brought at lower price, of course. But beside these aspects, the specialists say it is good worth because the breed is among the most appreciated ones.

Kittens who left mom too young.

1329881170 45 Kittens who left mom too young.Tiny kittens are very cute. This can often lead to them being taken away from their mother while they are still too young to go.

While they can walk, eat, and eliminate on their own around four weeks of age, this is only the beginning. Mom, and littermates, are supposed to teach a lot more things to the baby kitten.

When a kitten is not “raised by cats” this can be a kitten who hasn’t yet learned how to get along with others.

see more Lolcats and funny pictures, and check out our Socially Awkward Penguin lolz!

Here are some of the problem areas, and what to do about them:

Rough play. When a kitten doesn’t get the right feedback from their playmates, they will not know they are hurting. Littermates squeal, withdraw, and shun the offender. That’s what we should do.

Don’t get rough ourselves; this is not what we want to teach our kitten.

We must model the behavior we want to get back.

This is where humans often go wrong, and respond to roughness with roughness. This teaches the wrong things. We want to teach “you hurt me,” not “I’ll hurt you back!”

Not learning “no.” Humans can take a lifetime to cope with their wills being thwarted. Cats have the same challenge.

Nature meant to provide our kittens with early interactions with Mom and siblings; all speaking the same language, all littermates at the same age level. This helps a kitten build the mental structures that let them cope with frustration.

Other cats will model the right reactions; from diverting to another interest to soothing self-grooming. This helps the kitten realize they can try them, too.

Without other cats to show them the ropes, we need to be especially proactive with our kitten. Have plenty of toys handy to distract them from what they shouldn’t play with. Be quick with sweet talk and simple petting when our kitten is doing something right.

Recognition of other beings. A general lack of social skills can plague an otherwise delightful cat relationship. This is something a cat can learn later, but will require more input from those around them.

The complex ways of developing empathy works most easily when a kitten is raised with gentleness and understanding. It is believed that empathy develops when recognizing another’s emotional state activates parts of our own brain, which mirrors that same emotional state for us. So we can literally “feel another’s pain.”

However, we prefer feeling happy. So do our kitties. So creating “happy states” with our kittens will be the best way to help them understand others.

Then, they know how to get along with them.
